Everything You Need to Know About IPL Hair Reduction in Christchurch

You've probably heard of IPL hair removal, and you might have wondered whether it's really worth it. I've been working in skin since 2007, and IPL is the treatment I'd happily do all day, so I love talking about it. In this blog I'll walk you through what IPL is, how it works, what a session actually feels like, how many you'll need, and whether it's the right fit for you.

What is IPL Hair Reduction?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Instead of a single laser beam, it uses a broad band of light that's filtered to find the pigment in your hair. That light turns into gentle heat as it travels down the hair to the follicle, and the heat weakens the follicle's ability to grow a new hair.

Over a course of treatments, hair grows back finer, lighter and sparser, and many areas end up beautifully smooth. A lot of people search for laser hair removal in Christchurch when IPL is really what they're after. The two work on the same principle, and the best choice comes down to your skin and hair.

You'll notice I say hair reduction rather than removal. That's the honest word for it. Most people see a dramatic, long lasting reduction, and a touch up now and then keeps it that way.

Why People Choose IPL

I treat both women and men, and the reasons are as varied as the people on my treatment bed.

Getting time back. Shaving every day or booking waxes every few weeks adds up to hours each month. Imagine simply not having to think about it.

Feeling comfortable in your own skin. Unwanted hair on the face, underarms, bikini line, back or legs can quietly chip away at your confidence. Reducing it often brings a real sense of ease.

Fewer ingrown hairs. If you're prone to painful bumps after shaving or waxing, IPL treats the problem at the follicle, so there's far less hair trying to push through the skin.

Calmer, happier skin. Razor rash, nicks and waxing irritation are especially rough on sensitive skin. Less hair removal means less trauma to the skin barrier.

Active lifestyles. Whether it's the beach, the pool, the gym or a weekend tramp, you're always ready to go without packing a razor.

Hormonal hair growth. Conditions like PCOS can cause coarse hair on the chin, jaw and neck, and many women carry tweezers everywhere. IPL can make a real difference here. Because hormones can keep prompting new growth, maintenance sessions are usually part of the plan, and it works best alongside support from your GP.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your journey starts with a free trial, which includes a free test patch. This is where we get to know each other. I'll look at your skin and hair, talk through your health history and medications, and make sure IPL is safe and suitable for you. We'll talk openly about pricing and how many sessions you're likely to need, and I'll be real with you about the results you can expect. If IPL isn't going to give you the outcome you're hoping for, I'll tell you.

Before each session, shave the area the day or night before. Please avoid waxing, plucking, threading or hair removal creams for about four weeks beforehand, because IPL needs the hair root in place to do its job. Skip fake tan and keep the area out of the sun, too.

On the day, you'll pop on protective glasses and I'll apply a cool gel to the area. I always start with a few test flashes so I can fine tune the settings to your skin and hair. Once I'm happy, I'll work over the area with the handpiece.

Most people describe the feeling as a warm flick, a little like an elastic band. It passes instantly, and some areas feel like almost nothing while others are a touch more sensitive. I check in with you the whole way through.

A top lip takes a few minutes, while full legs can take up to an hour. There's no downtime, so you can head straight back to your day.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

IPL isn't a one visit fix. Hair grows in cycles, and only the hairs in their active growing phase respond to treatment at any one time. To catch every follicle, we repeat the treatment as new hairs come through.

Most people need around six to ten sessions. Facial areas are usually treated every four weeks, and body areas every six to eight weeks. Consistency matters more than anything, because stopping partway through lets hair regrow and means starting again later. Once your course is complete, an occasional maintenance session keeps things smooth.

Aftercare and What's Normal

Afterwards, your skin might look a little pink and feel warm, a bit like mild sunburn. This usually settles within a day. For 24 to 48 hours, avoid hot showers, saunas, spas and hard workouts.

Over the next one to three weeks, treated hairs will shed. This is a good sign. You can shave in between sessions, but please don't pluck or wax.

Sun care is the big one. Canterbury UV is fierce, and treated skin is more sensitive to it, so wear SPF 50 every day and keep the area covered for at least two weeks after each session. This is exactly why now is the best time to start.

Is IPL Right for You?

IPL works best on darker hair, because the light needs pigment to find the follicle. Blonde, grey, white and red hair have very little pigment, so they don't respond well. Skin tone matters too. Fair to medium skin with dark hair is the ideal match, while deeper or tanned skin needs careful settings and sometimes isn't suitable.

I also won't treat  over tattoos, over active eczema, psoriasis or broken skin, or if you're taking medication that makes your skin sensitive to light, including some antibiotics and acne medications.

The simplest way to know for sure is to book your free trial and test patch, so we can look at your skin together and you can feel the treatment for yourself before committing to anything.
